"Raise a glass to the African sunset with cold drinks and a crackling fire."
Few moments in the African bush are as perfect as a sundowner. As the late-afternoon light turns golden and the heat of the day softens, your guide will find a scenic spot — perhaps overlooking a dry riverbed, a sweeping open plain, or a rocky kopje — and bring the vehicle to a stop. Out come the cooler boxes, the folding chairs, and the snacks.
SANParks itself runs official Bush Braais & Bush Breakfasts at select camps inside Kruger. These guided experiences take you into the park before sunrise for a morning drive followed by a full breakfast in the bush, or in the evening for a braai under the stars with a ranger-led talk. They are bookable directly through SANParks and are available at camps like Skukuza, Lower Sabie, and Satara.
For the DIY version, all SANParks rest camps have designated braai areas where you can fire up the grid yourself, grill your own meat, and enjoy a meal under the full African sky. It is an authentic South African tradition — humble, communal, and deeply satisfying in a landscape like no other.
Many private lodges and camp operators also run dedicated Sundowner Drives: a short late-afternoon game drive that culminates at a scenic bush stop for drinks and snacks as the sun sets. It is consistently one of the most memorable moments guests take home from a Kruger safari.
Whether through SANParks, your lodge, or your own braai stand at camp, the sundowner and bush braai ritual is a Kruger institution worth building into every itinerary.
A relaxed and celebratory end to the safari day. Most sundowner stops last 30–45 minutes and are combined with a short afternoon game drive.
Most of these activities are accessible from major camps or nearby gates. Talk to our concierge or visit the SANParks reception at your camp.
