Wilderness Trails (4-Day)

"Go completely off-grid on one of the most exclusive safari experiences in Africa."

About the Experience

The SANParks Wilderness Trails are one of Kruger's most sought-after and exclusive experiences — and for good reason. They are deliberately remote, deliberately small, and deliberately stripped of modern comforts. Two armed and deeply experienced Field Rangers guide a group of no more than eight guests through pristine, untouched sections of Kruger where vehicles never go.

You sleep in basic but comfortable accommodation at a permanent trail camp — usually a tented or thatched hut without electricity. Mornings begin before dawn: coffee, a rusk, and then four to five hours of guided walking through the bush. Afternoons are free for rest, birdwatching from camp, or quiet reflection. Evenings are spent around the fire under a sky full of stars.

There are currently seven designated trails in Kruger, each in a different section of the park and offering a distinct landscape experience:

  • Bushman Trail (south, near Berg-en-Dal) — ancient San rock art, rhino country
  • Wolhuter Trail (south) — lion and buffalo territory, named after the famous ranger
  • Olifants Trail (central) — dramatic Olifants River views, elephant and lion
  • Metsi-Metsi Trail (central) — remote and wild, excellent predator sightings
  • Napi Trail (south-central) — dense bush, great for white rhino
  • Sweni Trail (central-east) — open grassland, close to the Mozambique border
  • Nyalaland Trail (far north, near Punda Maria) — fever tree forests, remote wilderness

Places are limited to eight guests and trails run on fixed weekly schedules. Demand is extremely high — especially for peak season slots — and waiting lists of six months to a year are not uncommon. Book as early as possible directly through SANParks.
