The Best Viewpoints in Kruger

While driving the roads is the primary way to see wildlife, Kruger National Park boasts several spectacular viewpoints that offer panoramic vistas of the African bushveld. These are perfect spots to stretch your legs (where permitted) and take in the sheer scale of the wilderness.

1. Nkumbe Viewpoint (Central Kruger)

Located on the H10, east of Tshokwane, Nkumbe is arguably the most breathtaking viewpoint in the entire park. The road climbs up a high ridge, suddenly revealing a sweeping, uninterrupted view over the vast, flat, grassy plains to the east, stretching towards the Lebombo Mountains and Mozambique. It is a fantastic place to scan for distant herds of buffalo or zebra.

2. Olifants River Viewpoint (Near Olifants Camp)

The Olifants Rest Camp itself is famous for its commanding position high above the Olifants River, but you don't even need to enter the camp to enjoy similar views. The roads surrounding the camp offer several designated lookout points where you can gaze down at the wide river, often spotting hippos, crocodiles, and large herds of elephants coming down to drink.

3. Mathew's Kop (Near Skukuza)

Located on the S114, Mathew's Kop is a rocky outcrop named after a prominent figure in the park's early history. You can drive a short loop up the hill and park at the top. The elevated view provides a great vantage point over the thick bushveld of the southern region. It's a peaceful spot and a great place to bring out the binoculars.

4. Luvuvhu River Bridge (Far North)

In the extreme north, near Pafuri, the landscape changes drastically to lush, tropical riverine forest. The high bridge over the Luvuvhu River on the H1-9 offers a fantastic, elevated view along the riverway. Crocodiles bask on the sandbanks below, and the birdlife in the surrounding giant Sycamore Figs and Nyala trees is absolutely phenomenol.

5. Rabelais Dam (Central)

While not a "viewpoint" in the sense of high elevation, the viewing area at Rabelais Dam (on the S106 near Orpen) offers a wonderful, wide-angle view across the water. It is a highly productive spot for watching wildlife interactions during the dry season as animals flock to the remaining water.

Remember: Only alight from your vehicle at viewpoints if there is a specific sign explicitly permitting it. Always check your surroundings carefully before opening your doors.
