"Historic soul, modern luxury — deep inside Kruger's southern wilderness."
Jock Safari Lodge holds a rare private concession inside Kruger National Park. Unlike private game reserves, guests are still within the national park itself — enjoying SANParks biodiversity with exclusive lodge-level service.
Named after the legendary Staffordshire Terrier of Sir Percy FitzPatrick's 1907 classic novel, Jock Safari Lodge is one of the few luxury lodges operating entirely within the unfenced boundaries of Kruger National Park. Situated in a private 6,000 ha concession in the south, it combines genuine wilderness access with stylish, heritage-inspired comfort.
Jock Safari Lodge holds a singular place in South African safari history. Perched on the confluence of the Mitomeni and Biyamiti rivers, the lodge draws its name — and its soul — from Percy FitzPatrick's beloved 1907 novel "Jock of the Bushveld," one of South Africa's greatest literary works. The original Jock walked these very plains.
What makes Jock truly exceptional is its legal status: it is one of a tiny number of private lodges permitted to operate a luxury concession inside the unfenced national park itself. This means guests benefit from SANParks-standard wilderness (no tourist traffic on concession roads, vast undisturbed territory), combined with a level of service and comfort that SANParks rest camps cannot match.
The lodge's 12 suites are architecturally superb — built from stone, canvas, and indigenous timber with sweeping river-facing decks and private plunge pools. The open-plan main area features a boma, a curated wine cellar, and a library stocked with bush literature including, of course, Jock of the Bushveld.
The southern concession is famous for its concentration of leopard, lion, elephant, rhino, and buffalo. Because Jock's guides operate on private concession roads closed to self-drive tourists, you may find yourself watching a leopard feed at leisure with no other vehicle in sight — an experience becoming increasingly rare in modern Kruger.
Multi-course bush dinners under the stars in the riverbed boma, bush breakfasts on private decks, and elegant lunches at the main lodge. Fully inclusive with curated South African wines.
Jock operates a dedicated anti-poaching unit within its concession and contributes to SANParks rhino monitoring programs. The lodge practices strict low-impact operations policies including solar power supplementation and grey-water recycling.
