Tanda Tula (meaning "love the quiet" in Tsonga) is a classic tented camp that has operated in the Timbavati since 1973, making it one of the oldest private camps in the Greater Kruger ecosystem. Twelve luxury canvas tents overlook the seasonal Nhlaralumi River, offering an authentic East African-style safari experience in one of Southern Africa's most prestigious private reserves.
Tanda Tula Safari Camp is the embodiment of classic African safari romance. The name — derived from "tanda tula" meaning "love the quiet" in Tsonga — sets the tone perfectly. This is a camp that values stillness, nature, and the unhurried pace of genuine bush living.
The 12 tents are full safari classics — expansive canvas pavilions on raised timber platforms, each featuring an oversized king bed, en-suite bathroom, and an outdoor deck raised above the seasonal Nhlaralumi River. The interiors lean elegantly into tradition: wooden furniture, brass fixtures, white linen, and nets cascading from cedar poles. There is nothing superfluous, and everything is perfect.
The Timbavati Private Nature Reserve shares an open boundary with Kruger, enabling wildlife to move freely through approximately 53,000 hectares of combined wilderness. The Timbavati is famous for its large prides of lion, its leopards, and historically as the territory where the legendary white lions of the Timbavati were first documented. All Big 5 can be found here, and the off-road driving privileges of a private reserve allow guides to follow sightings with patience and proximity impossible on public Kruger roads.
