"Exceptional game viewing. Unforgettable warmth."
Thornybush Game Lodge is the flagship property of the Thornybush Private Nature Reserve — a 14,000 ha reserve sharing an open boundary with Kruger National Park. Warm, elegant, and family-friendly, Thornybush offers a more accessible entry point into private reserve luxury without sacrificing wildlife quality.
Thornybush Game Reserve sits adjacent to Timbavati, sharing an open, unfenced boundary with Kruger — allowing game to move freely across a vast combined ecosystem. The reserve's 14,000 hectares encompasses multiple habitats including dense riverine woodland, open bushveld, and waterholes that attract a remarkable diversity of species.
Thornybush Game Lodge — the original and flagship camp — is built around the philosophy of warmth and personalised service. The main lodge areas have an inviting, social atmosphere: a large thatched boma, curated wine cellar, pool overlooking a busy waterhole, and dining areas where guests gather naturally to share the day's sightings.
The 20 well-appointed suites provide genuine comfort — private terraces, air conditioning, and elegant bush-inspired decor — without the almost clinical minimalism of some ultra-luxury properties. This is luxury that feels lived-in and human.
Thornybush is famed for excellent predator sightings — particularly lion and leopard. The waterhole opposite the main lodge is one of the most productive game-viewing spots in the entire greater Kruger, often attracting sightings without ever leaving the lodge.
Hearty, generous South African and international cuisine. Boma dinners are a highlight — long communal tables under the stars, sharing the day's stories over grilled game meat and local wines.
Thornybush Private Nature Reserve is a founding member of the Balule Conservancy and contributes to lion and leopard monitoring programs. The reserve operates anti-poaching patrols and a rhino conservation fund.
