Jock Safari Lodge: A Honeymoon to Remember in the Heart of Kruger

We spent two days at Jock Safari Lodge during our honeymoon in 2023. The arrival itself feels exclusive, as the approach leads down a private access road that is closed off to regular park visitors. After a few minutes on this road, the lodge comes into view, blending seamlessly into the landscape, and you enter through an automated gate. Right past the entrance, you arrive at the reception building, which offers ample parking and where we received an exceptionally warm welcome.

While taking in the stunning, open-sided tented seating area, we were immediately offered refreshments, followed by a brief tour of the property. Since we had arrived slightly early, the bartender served us drinks at the rooftop bar while our bungalow was being prepared. The rooftop bar alone is breathtaking, offering fantastic views over the riverbed and the surrounding park.

The Bungalow: Absolute Privacy

Shortly after, we were escorted to our bungalow, where a welcome package and—in celebration of our honeymoon—a bottle of sparkling wine were waiting for us.

Calling it a "bungalow" is almost an understatement. It features a spacious, completely private outdoor area that is secluded from the rest of the lodge. This space includes a plunge pool, sun loungers, an outdoor bathtub, and a veranda complete with a daybed. The pool is unheated, which is undeniably a huge advantage during the hot summer months.

The interior leaves nothing to be desired either. It consists of a combined living and sleeping area with a large bed, comfortable seating, and plenty of storage, alongside a generously sized bathroom featuring two showers and a separate toilet. In terms of design and sheer wow factor, the space is absolutely flawless.

World-Class Safaris & Exceptional Guiding

After having a chance to freshen up and review the daily schedule provided in the room, it was time to head to the main building where an outstanding lunch awaited us in the lodge restaurant. It left no wish unfulfilled, and we still fondly remember it whenever my wife, Anna, recreates the incredible Bobotie using the recipe the head chef shared with us.

After some rest back at our bungalow we headed back to the main Building where we met our guide, Patrick, who turned out to be an absolute stroke of luck. Each guide is responsible for guests from just two bungalows, ensuring the open safari vehicles always have more than enough space and the guide has plenty of time to answer everyone's questions.

After enjoying some snacks and drinks, and filling up the complimentary water bottles provided by the lodge, we set off on our first game drive (a night drive). We were incredibly fortunate: shortly before we arrived, lions had taken down a buffalo not far from the lodge, meaning our first major sighting didn't take long at all. And this was not the only stroke of luck we experienced this evening, as we had the unbelievable luck of spotting more than ten rhinos and three leopards.

The game drives generally follow a steady rhythm of driving, observing, and tracking. The success rate here is incredibly high, thanks to the off-the-beaten-path routes, highly experienced guides, and the lodge's own trackers. Midway through, there is a break with drinks and cookies, allowing you to stretch your legs under the guide's supervision before continuing the drive back to the lodge.

As mentioned, we hit the jackpot with Patrick, who proved to be a walking encyclopedia. Having traveled extensively through the Kruger National Park over the years, and having briefly run my own safari business in an adjacent park, I had never met a guide with such profound knowledge and genuine passion for his work. We hit it off immediately and remain in touch to this day.

Culinary Highlights & A Night Under the Stars

Once back at the lodge, instead of joining the other guests for dinner, we were escorted back to our bungalow. A private candlelight dinner had been arranged on our terrace to celebrate our honeymoon, featuring impeccable service and phenomenal food.

To make the evening absolutely perfect, we decided to sleep outside in the covered daybed, safely enclosed by a thick mosquito net. It was a decision we didn't regret. Although it was a chilly winter night, we were provided with plenty of blankets, and the feeling of sleeping right in the middle of the Kruger National Park wilderness is simply indescribable. That night, an impala was taken down by lions less than 10 meters from our bed (though we were never in any danger, thanks to the fence and the elevated terrace). An unbelievable experience!

Walking Safaris & The Boma Experience

The following day's safaris were equally thrilling, and the sheer volume of sightings was incredible. After a superb breakfast following our morning drive, we joined Patrick for a walking safari deep into the bush. Once again, we learned and saw so much. I can highly recommend taking advantage of this optional (yet included) activity!

That evening, after another incredible game drive that again was unbelievably successful, as we had the luck of spotting more than ten rhinos and three leopards, we enjoyed a wonderful dinner in the lodge's Boma, complete with a campfire, traditional dancing, and a joyful atmosphere.

Conclusion

In summary, we can recommend Jock Safari Lodge without hesitation. I would advise anyone to treat themselves to this experience at least once in their lifetime. Yes, the prices are steep, but the experiences are worth every single cent.
